tears and fraying in antique roman chasuble

by Kathleen
(Kentucky, USA)

Any suggestions as to repairing tears and fraying in the shoulder area of a very old chasuble? It is made of some kind of satin, and the lining shows through. Is made a bit worse every time priest wears it, but he insists!

Not Much You Can Do For an Antique Chasuble
by: Lynne Green

Hello Kathleen,

I'm afraid there's not much you can do to repair a chasuble that is that worn. I suppose you'll have to let the priest wear it until he wears a hole completely through it. Maybe then he'll consider a new chasuble.

Is it that he can't find a new one in the same style? If so, you could take it apart and make a pattern from the pieces (if he is willing, that is).

Sorry we couldn't be more help.
