Making a Reversible Fiddleback

by Monty

Hi: Great website. My wife has made a couple of fiddleback style vestment sets. Our priest mentioned that he would like to have a reversible chasuble with purple on one side and gold on the other.

Do you have a technique for making a reversible fiddleback style chasuble? The tricky part will be the tie tape; usually it is attached to the inside of the chest area.

I thought maybe running the tape between the layers, then putting two button holes to pass the ties through to the side that will be hidden.

Reversible Fiddlebacks Are Very Hard to Make
by: Lynne Green

I have only made two or three fiddleback vestments in my career, and I found they were very hard to make, in my opinion.

Are you sure you want to make a reversible fiddleback? You are asking for a lot of headaches to make one. A reversible fiddleback can be extremely heavy with face fabric on both sides, as well as galloons, the emblem and embroidery on both sides as well. It will also be hot!

I am thinking it would be far easier to just make two fiddlebacks - one in gold and one in purple, even if it might take extra fabric.

The only fabric you will save in making a reversible fiddleback is the lining fabric, which - if you use satin - can be purchased at a very reasonable price at any fabric store.

However, if you do choose to make a reversible fiddleback, the hems will have to be exactly right, which is very hard to do. Of course, you could sew galloons over the edges to hide the seams. The method you suggest of running tape between the layers should work all right.
