Buying Linen

by Sarah

I would like to begin sewing church linens but I am confused by the types of linen. Regarding price, they seem to be all over the charts from $7 to $55+. Is there a

standard for church linens? I can't afford the $55 yd. linen so what is acceptable? Thank you.

No polyester blend!
by: Elizabeth D

Altar linens should be of linen or cotton but never polyester. The reason is, they have to be absorbent. This is extremely important. Purificators in particular should certainly never have any polyester. But really neither should the corporal or altar cloth etc; If the Precious Blood spills during Mass, the linens should absorb effectively so the spill can be dealt with reverently. Linen-cotton blend is okay and costs less than linen. Polyester blend is not suitable.

Fabric for Church Linens
by: Lynne and Sue

It used to be that only fine linens (the $55 per yard variety) were the only type of linen to use.

However, we noticed that a Catholic Supply store was selling church linens out of a poly/cotton blend.

I don't think it would be a problem to make your church linens out of the lower-cost fabric, if that's all you can afford.

Hope this helps,

Lynne and Sue
